Lech Wałęsa. One of the most important and at the same time most colourful figures in Polish history. In communist Poland he was a simple electrician, then he led the downfall of communism in Poland, and consequently in other countries of Eastern Europe. Winner of the Nobel Peace Prize 1983, President of Poland from 1990 to 1995. The film tells the incredible story of Lech Wałęsa and his wife Danuta.

The turmoil of the last days of the war. 13-year-old Tom loses his mother while on the run. In Vienna he meets the one-legged black marketeer 'Krücke' - a sly, cunning survivalist and at the same time an adorable, kind friend. The two find shelter with Bronka, a Jewish woman who serves alcohol to Allied soldiers and black marketeers. Tom and Krücke settle into this insecure world. Krücke plays the saxophone, Tom waits tables, until one day a return to Germany becomes possible. But the train that the one-legged man and the boy board is stranded in no man's land...

The film tells the story of Martin S., his return to Dresden, which he left more than 20 years ago. He discovered some film materials of his own that he shot in 1988, and came upon his files held by the State Security where there was information given by a person which contained details that could only be known by his then first love. So begins his search and questioning about his memories and testing believed reality.
